The Greek God of Wine.

Bacchus is also an interesting white grape variety resulting from the cross of Silvaner x Riesling and Muller Thurgau created in 1933.

Bacchus is grown in both Germany and England and the English version is where I have had several bottlings.

Bacchus seems to do best in England, given its cooler climate, and Chapel Down makes a stunning example.

The nose is almost Riesling like with slight petrol and lime peel but has a whiff of New Zealand gooseberry.  The palate is dry and racy with hints of green pear, apricot and wet stone.

A true delight for spring sipping and oysters on the half shell.
